Root Cause of Disease

Back pain, particularly lower back pain, is very common. It usually improves within a few weeks but can sometimes last longer or keep coming back. There are things you can do to help ease the pain. A common cause of back pain is an injury like a pulled muscle (strain). Sometimes, medical conditions like a slipped disc, sciatica (a trapped nerve) or ankylosing spondylitis can cause back pain.

Symptoms

Back pain can range from a muscle aching to a shooting, burning or stabbing sensation. Also, the pain can radiate down a leg. Bending, twisting, lifting, standing or walking can make it worse. Most back pain gradually improves with home treatment and self-care, usually within a few weeks.

Contact your health care provider for back pain that:

  • Lasts longer than a few weeks
  • Is severe and doesn’t improve with rest
  • Spreads down one or both legs, especially if the pain goes below the knee.
  • Causes weakness, numbness or tingling in one or both legs.
  • Is paired with unexplained weight loss

In rare cases, back pain can signal a serious medical problem. Seek immediate care for back pain that:

  • Causes new bowel or bladder problems
  • Is accompanied by a fever
  • Follows a fall, blow to the back or other injury

Causes

Back pain often develops without a cause that shows up in a test or imaging study.

Conditions commonly linked to back pain include:

  • Muscle or ligament strain: Repeated heavy lifting or a sudden awkward movement can strain back muscles and spinal ligaments. For people in poor physical condition, constant strain on the back can cause painful muscle spasms.
  • Bulging or ruptured discs:& Disks act as cushions between the bones in the spine. The soft material inside a disk can bulge or rupture and press on a nerve. However, a bulging or ruptured disk might not cause back pain. Disk disease is often found on spine X-rays, CT scans or MRIs done for another reason.
  • Arthritis: Osteoarthritis can affect the lower back. In some cases, arthritis in the spine can lead to a narrowing of the space around the spinal cord, a condition called spinal stenosis.
  • Osteoporosis: The spine’s vertebrae can develop painful breaks if the bones become porous and brittle.

Structural problems

A number of structural problems may also result in back pain.

  • Ruptured discs: Each vertebra in the spine is cushioned by disks. If the disk ruptures there will be more pressure on a nerve, resulting in back pain.
  • Bulging discs: In much the same way as ruptured discs, a bulging disk can result in more pressure on a nerve.
  • Sciatica: A sharp and shooting pain travels through the buttock and down the back of the leg, caused by a bulging or herniated disk pressing on a nerve.
  • Arthritis: Osteoarthritis can cause problems with the joints in the hips, lower back, and other places. In some cases, the space around the spinal cord narrows. This is known as spinal stenosis.
  • Abnormal curvature of the spine: If the spine curves in an unusual way, back pain can result. An example is scoliosis, in which the spine curves to the side.
  • Osteoporosis: Bones, including the vertebrae of the spine, become brittle and porous, making compression fractures more likely

Adopting a very hunched sitting position when using computers can result in increased back and shoulder problems over time. Back pain can also result from some everyday activities or poor posture. Examples include:

  • twisting
  • coughing or sneezing
  • muscle tension
  • over-stretching
  • bending awkwardly or for long periods
  • pushing, pulling, lifting, or carrying something.
  • standing or sitting for long periods
  • straining the neck forward, such as when driving or using a computer.
  • long driving sessions without a break, even when not hunched.
  • sleeping on a mattress that does not support the body and keep the spine straight.

Home Remedies to treat Back Pain

Remedy – 1: Turmeric milk

Turmeric is easily available in your kitchen and has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. The main bioactive compound of turmeric called curcumin may have anti-inflammatory properties, which might be beneficial for reducing the pain in the body. Turmeric milk might be a good home remedy for back pain.

Procedure:

Add one teaspoon of turmeric powder to half a cup of milk (hot/cold) and mix it well. Add some honey for sweetness if needed. Drink this turmeric milk at night for possible

Remedy – 2: Ginger tea

Ginger is the most common spice found at home. It is used for culinary purposes. Ginger might be used as an instant remedy for back pain. Ginger contains bioactive chemicals such as zingerone and gingerol. These compounds may have anti-inflammatory activities that might help decrease the pain.

Procedure:

To make ginger tea, take a small piece of ginger root wash and remove the peel. Next, you can slice or grate ginger and add it to boiling water. Cool and strain the ginger after letting it boil for about ten minutes. Finally, add honey or lemon juice if you need it.

Remedy – 3: Galangal

Galangal may be used as a home remedy for back pain because it might have anti-inflammatory properties. Galangal tea may provide a back pain solution at home.

Procedure:

  • To make galangal tea, add a small piece of crushed galangal root to any tea of your choice, and boil them together in water for a few minutes.
  • Then, strain the tea, add sugar or honey and drink this tea in the morning and evening for quick back pain relief.

Remedy- 4: Garlic

Garlic is a herb that is used in the treatment of several health complications. Garlic has effectively been used in the treatment of back pain.

Two or three cloves of garlic can be eaten every morning on an empty stomach to help reduce back pain. Garlic oil can also be used in back massage to help reduce back pain.

Remedy- 5: Vinegar

One teaspoon of liquid vinegar is added to one liter of water and taken very early in the morning on an empty stomach as a back pain home remedy. This should be done each day for fast treatment of back pain.

Remedy- 6: Potato Juice

The raw potato juice therapy is one of the most successful remedies and natural treatments for back pain.

Procedure:

The whole potato without peeling off the skin is cut into slices and kept overnight in a large glass of cold water. The water is then consumed early in the morning on an empty stomach. This back pain home remedy should be done each day for some time for effective alleviation of back pain.

Remedy -7: Poppy Seeds

Poppy seeds have been used medically in the treatment of back pain. 

Procedure:

Grind together one hundred grams each of poppy seeds and rocky candy and add to warm water to make a mixture. At least two teaspoons of this mixture should be taken twice each day followed by a glass of milk as a back pain home remedy.

Preventions

Improving one’s physical condition and learning and practicing how to use the body might help prevent back pain.

To keep the back healthy and strong:

  • Exercise: Regular low-impact aerobic activities — those that don’t strain or jolt the back — can increase strength and endurance in the back and allow the muscles to work better. Walking, bicycling and swimming are good choices. Talk with your health care provider about which activities to try.
  • Build muscle strength and flexibility: Abdominal and back muscle exercises, which strengthen the core, help condition these muscles so that they work together to support the back.
  • Maintain a healthy weight: Being overweight strains back muscles.
  • Quit smoking: Smoking increases the risk of low back pain. The risk increases with the number of cigarettes smoked per day, so quitting should help reduce this risk.

Avoid movements that twist or strain the back. To use the body properly:

  • Stand smart: Don’t slouch. Maintain a neutral pelvic position. When standing for long periods, place one foot on a low footstool to take some of the load off the lower back. Alternate feet. Good posture can reduce the stress on back muscles.
  • Sit smart: Choose a seat with good lower back support, armrests and a swivel base. Placing a pillow or rolled towel in the small of the back can maintain its normal curve. Keep knees and hips level. Change position frequently, at least every half-hour.
  • Lift smart: Avoid heavy lifting, if possible. If you must lift something heavy, let your legs do the work. Keep your back straight — no twisting — and bend only at the knees. Hold the load close to your body. Find a lifting partner if the object is heavy or awkward.
  • Use a heating pad or a hot water bottle and apply it on the hurting area to ease the pain. You can also massage the ice on your back, but not directly. Whichever makes you feel better you can try it either hot or cold.
  • Fresh yarrow juice is a great way to strengthen the back muscles. This may help in preventing the back problem.
