Pyoderma, Yellow crusts, Sores, Staphylococcus bacteria
Root Cause of Disease
Impetigo is caused by bacteria, usually staphylococci organisms. You might be exposed to the bacteria that cause impetigo when you come into contact with the sores of someone who’s infected or with items they’ve touched — such as clothing, bed linen, towels and even toys.
Impetigo is a common skin infection, especially among children, that is usually caused by Staphylococcus bacteria. Symptoms include blisters and a rash. Impetigo is treated with antibiotics.
Symptoms
- One or more pus-filled blisters that burst easily, causing red, raw skin.
- Itchy blisters containing fluid (yellow or tan) that seeps out and forms a crust.
- A rash that spreads.
- Skin lesions(wounds) on the lips, nose, ears, arms and legs. The lesions can spread to other parts of the body.
- Swollen lymph nodes near the infected area.
If you or your child has impetigo caused by staph bacteria, you may notice:
- Reddish skin surrounding red blisters, full of liquid or pus that eventually looks cloudy.
- Blisters that burst easily and leak.
- Raw, shiny areas that scab over with a yellow/brown crust.
Causes
- Live in a warm, humid climate.
- Have diabetes.
- Have a compromised immune system, such as from HIV or AIDS.
- Have skin conditions, such as eczema, dermatitis, or psoriasis.
- Have a sunburn or other burns.
- Have itchy infections, such as lice, scabies, herpes simplex, or chickenpox.
- Have insect bites or poison ivy.
