Root Cause:

Non-bullous impetigo is most commonly caused by S aureus which is responsible for 80% of cases. Group A beta-hemolytic Strep (GABHS) accounts for 10% of cases and the causative agent is a combination of S. aureus and GABHS 10% of the time.

Symptoms:

The symptoms of non-bullous impetigo begin with the appearance of red sores – usually around the nose and mouth but other areas of the face and the limbs can also be affected. The sores quickly burst leaving behind thick, golden crusts typically around 2cm across.

Causes:

Non-bullous impetigo is a common bacterial skin infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria. Here are some of the common causes of non-bullous impetigo:

  1. Skin trauma: The bacteria can enter the skin through small cuts, scrapes, insect bites, or other skin injuries.
  2. Poor hygiene: Poor hygiene practices such as not washing hands frequently, not showering regularly, and wearing dirty clothes can increase the risk of developing impetigo.
  3. Close contact with an infected person: Impetigo is highly contagious and can spread through close contact with someone who has the infection.
  4. Crowded living conditions: People living in crowded conditions such as schools, daycare centers, and nursing homes are at a higher risk of developing impetigo.
  5. Weakened immune system: People with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS or cancer, are more susceptible to impetigo.
  6. Climate: Warm and humid climates can also increase the risk of developing impetigo, as the bacteria thrive in these conditions.
